SongLines

I’ve been spending far too much time on YouTube lately, watching music videos. I love lots of new music, but it’s also great rediscovering the recordings that played in the background of my childhood and teen years... and of course I fall in love with the lyrics all over and am compelled to do them in calligraphy. Posted here are closeups of some of the work. Can you guess the songs?

I would be so happy if I could write like this, it is inspiring.
Please can I copy it so I can analyse and then practice?

Absolutely, Hillary!

Hillary, I should add that not all these letters are perfect! I tend to work quickly and instinctively, and that does mean the letter shapes are not always what classical italic calligraphy strives for... copy at your own peril :)

Hi Alice, I started with a dip pen10 years ago and I struggle to leave the formal shapes, flourishing is a nightmare for me. You have such and elegant way here that I thought it might help me gain some freedom. Thank you for the warning. I understand.

Beautiful work Alice. Your gradients reminded me of something I did once. Obviously I am just an amateur and not even close to what you have done but was looking for some criticism on that piece..Heres the link:

Haha, we're all always amateurs in calligraphy, Yousuf!
Your work is wonderful - love bastarda. The quote is great, too; I think it's not too late to give it to your friend!

These are SO beautiful... I'm curious what pen you used to make these and what the size of the nib was. Just beautiful!

Thanks, Kathy! Written with a Pilot Parallel pen, size 2.4mm (orange cap). And I used the Herbin inks mentioned in the last post.

I only just figured out that I could click on the images to enlarge them. Your letter formations are beautiful and the colours...they're gorgeous. I really like how the colours fuse together.

Your work is so free and spontaneous. And I just love the colors how there is so variation within each letter.

I've just attended a workshop by Carl Rohr. Some of the pen techniques are very similar to what he taught us.

I also discovered Private Preserve Ink (Shoreline Gold) which produces the same effects. Where can I find the Herbin Inks?

P.S. I also have a blog (manita-socmom.blogspot.com) that shows Carl Rohr in action and an example of the shoreline gold ink.
