Victoria’s Question

In response to Victoria’s question, here’s the unlikely combination of tools I used for Transcend: a 3" Chinese brush, a Speedball metal brush and a 6.0 mm Pilot parallel pen. The Chinese brush works well, but I’m still searching for the ultimate tool for larger (2" and up) calligraphy (which creates thin flourishes) – does anyone else have suggestions?

I have no recommendations for a 3" brush, but I'm getting my 3" Chinese brush out again and playing with it! How did you get the brush lettering to work across the split? I'm curious.

Hi Beth - just by having the canvases placed tightly together, and working quite fast...

I wanna take a class from you!!

All those lovely strokes and I want to learn how to make that cedar brush.

I may have a suggestion for larger strokes...I use it in the acrylic portion of the floral class.

Wow! Scary stuff -- working across a gulf like that. The only way I've managed something like that is to cut the thing apart afterwards. I may have to try this technique of yours.

This probably is a stupid suggestion but what I used to do for larger pieces is to use a piece of chalk sideways i.e hold it by its 2 points and draw with its side...of course this would probably work only on a blackboard or on black paper...(like I said stupid idea)...

Alice your piece in the previous post is wonderful.
I'd be nervous also working across canvas pieces already stretched.

Wish I also had a good answer for you about a big brush. But I don't.
I'll have to keep my eyes open.

I'll bring one of them with me to Conference and I'll show you how to make this VERY special wide tool. You will be amazed. :)

W&N Cotman Wash Brush has 2" and works pretty well.

Have you tried cutting a piece of Balsa wood or heavy card?
